Many of the approximations used are not valid for systems with large IF frequencies and they are too rough for the desired calibration accuracy of a few percent. Moreover, they do not exploit the full capabilities of instruments with two thermal load for the bandpass calibration. We propose a new calibration scheme for the planning and reduction of HIFI observations, taking advantage of the lack of an atmosphere and correcting for the effects of standing waves in the combined observation of lines and continuum with HIFI. The new calibration scheme uses a separate OFF measurement to determine the properties of standing waves between the subreflector and the receiver. Two different effects are corrected. Standing wave ripples are removed from the continuum level providing the spectral baseline of the observations and the modulation of the line strengths by standing waves is corrected in the absolute line calibration. However, at high frequencies the standing wave correction imposes severe constraints on the integration time for the OFF measurement. A reasonable use of the standing-wave calibration is thus only possible if the standing wave pattern is stable over long time scales. We have also provided an accurate estimate of the error budget of the calibration allowing to put clear limits on the accuracy of the different instrumental parameters required to achieve a given intensity calibration accuracy. Unfortunately, several of the committee members were unable to attend. The ALMA Board decided today that they would prefer to reschedule the meeting when a larger number of committee members could attend. On behalf of the ALMA Board and the JAO, I'd like to apologize to everyone for the short notice and thank everyone for the work that has already gone into preparing for this meeting. I will let you know about rescheduling as soon as a date is selected. In the meantime, the JAO has asked that ALMA project people not cancel their travel plans and arrive as scheduled in Socorro. We will use the opportunity to tour the Vertex antenna and work on completing the level two and level three milestones, as well as other topics that will benefit from having everyone together. We will distribute shortly a revised schedule for the splinter meetings that were scheduled around the AMAC meeting. The main purpose of the agenda is to plan the System Engineering IPT activities that week but I also indicate the JAO/IPT meetings Jan 21 and 22 as I understand them from the NA DH teleconference Jan 13. All ALMA visitors are invited to the dinner on Wednesday night. There may be some agenda changes early next week. ..Dick Sramek.. -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Based on discussions with Fred Lo and the JAO, we have asked John to develop a comprehensive plan to complete the development of the LO that spans both the Back End and Front End IPTs. John will work within the existing IPT structure to coordinate the efforts to carry out this plan through integration of a complete prototype LO system that meets all ALMA requirements. John will report regularly to the JAO on progress and issues that may impact the LO schedule, cost or performance of this critical ALMA subsystem. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... While flat and anti-cocking flanges are in many ways similar to the /67B flange, there are important differences in drilling, counterboring, and pin insertion details if these flanges are to be compatible with one another and with the /67B standard. Due to the long distribution length from central building to each of the antennas, the fiber optic path to each antenna must be stabilized to meet the ALMA specification. A round trip phase correction technique has been adopted to meet these specifications, and that technique is described here. Also, a summary of various techniques that have been used at other installations is given. Results reported here are given for tests completed through April, 2002. Further tests are planned and will be reported at a later date.
